Artist's Comments

This is a design I created for the Apparel Company I work for. We are a small company that is rather new. My boss is retired special forces, so we focus much of our efforts on military based designs.

The design turned out rather nice once we printed our production samples. All of us at the shop thought it was a home run and would be a very successful design. We were so wrong.

We finalized the design this past fall and have tried in vain to sell it to no avail. Although we have had much interest shown in the design and get very good feedback, no one will pick it up.

We have come to a point of total frustration with the design and I have dubbed it the Bain of my existence. The design is not the most spectacular thing I have ever done. It's simple and to the point but it says something important.

I finally decided to post the design on DA to see what kind of feedback or reaction I would get to the design. So please feel free to tell me exactly what you think of it.

Thanks

Cool design man. I know that it says America, but with the bottom of the letter "E" partially blocked off my brain keeps trying to tell me it says Africa.

Also, it's a little boxy, I assume when you say apparel you mean printing this on a t-shirt. I'd take that field that they're standing on and turn it into a the top of a hill so your line's not going straight across.

Also, your sandy brown back ground colors look more like what I think of when I think of where our soldiers are, not the American back ground that they are coming home to in your written message at the bottom.

Also, if they're being welcomed home why are most of them pointing their guns, or fist in the air?

Also, I've always been told that odd numbers look more visually pleasing than even numbers so maybe five soldiers would have been better.

Also, the texture of your brown clouds and your fading border do not look like they could be printed using traditional screen printing. that's neither here nor there, I know there's more than one way to print a shirt. and i'm not 100% on this but I feel like if there was less fading to your textures and colors and they were more solid colors they'd be cheaper to print but again I'm not totally positive on that.

Hey Jay,

Thanks for the input. I really appreciate it. Yes, this was printed on a t-shirt. I'll send you a picture of the actual printed shirt. We first tried printing the shirt using CMYK separations and process inks. It worked but the color was flat and didn't pop. It also didn't work on darker color shirts, as it looked even flatter. So I had to re-separate the art and did it as Index separations and it looks awesome on white, gray and black shirts. It looks the best on the black shirts because, like u pointed out it is boxy and on the black shirts the black in the design is shirt color.

You have valid point about the number of soldiers and I didn't think about the background being an issue. The soldiers are supposed to look like they are standing at the crest of a hill with a sand storm behind them. It's supposed to represent where the soldiers are coming home from, not to.

As for the pointing guns, the are pointing up but they are being held in relaxed positions and not being held as if they where ready to fight. It's supposed to be more like they just finished fighting and now there job is done.

I don't see the Africa thing but I know what it says and have been staring at for months now.

Well like I said thanks for the feedback. I'll definitely keep it in mind. And yes you are right about the even / odd numbers and it never even crossed my mind when I was making it.
